Chapter Ten

The next day was Saturday, and Ian’s wickedly playful mood continued. He had made dinner reservations, and while she was getting ready, putting the final touches on her makeup, the bathroom door behind her opened. She caught a hint of the clean fresh scent of his body wash when he moved up behind her.

He didn’t say a word for the longest time, making her wonder what he was up to. With the mascara wand hovering an inch in front of her face, her eyes shifted to his in the mirror. He stood watching her, arms crossed over his bare chest, his mouth curved up slightly on the ends in a satisfied grin like the Cheshire cat.

She arched her brows at him in question.

“Do you know what today is?”

She frowned, poring over the mental calendar in her head. Quickly, she ruled out a missed birthday and their wedding anniversary, which had been months earlier. Coming up blank, she shook her head.

“It’s been a month since we came to an agreement to fully embrace D/s in our marriage.”

She sighed in relief. “Thank goodness, I thought I’d missed your fortieth birthday or something.”

The smile slipped as he grunted, “Two years to go until that dreaded day; thanks for the reminder.”

Smothering her amusement that a man as fit, sexy, and gorgeous as Ian could be so sensitive about his age, she turned to face him. As his masculine scent filled her senses, she couldn’t resist stepping closer and with fingers splayed wide, sliding them along his defined abs to his muscular chest.

As she continued up and over his broad shoulders, she angled her head and glanced up at him hesitantly, almost shyly—an emotion she only felt around Ian. “I think things are going well, don’t you, sir?”

“Very well, I’m thirty days smoke free.”

“I’m so proud of you for that, Ian.”

“Thanks, baby. It’s been harder than I thought it would be, but I already feel better. And you, my good girl, I’m very pleased with how hard you’ve been trying. I think others have noticed a positive difference.”

“Me, too, and I can’t keep from laughing at some of the baffled looks I receive.”

Beaming with pride, she leaned in and stood up on her toes, lifting her mouth for a kiss, which he gave generously. “I meant us, Ian,” she added, slightly breathless when they broke the kiss.

“I know you did, Gi,” he replied softly. “And to celebrate the strides we’ve both made in the marital bliss arena, I made reservations for a romantic dinner at Eddie Merlot’s.”

Though a chain restaurant, the chef made a phenomenal braised short rib stroganoff and his French onion soup with five different types of onions and huge in-house-made croutons, topped with melted Gruyère and Parmesan cheeses, was a religious experience.

“Mm, my favorite.”

“I’m aware of that, too,” he chuckled, with another brush of his lips. “And I thought to make things a bit more exciting with a special little twist.”

“What’s that?”

“Face the mirror and I’ll show you.”
